Netflix Announces Plans to Establish First Internal Games Studio

Netflix is opening its own video game studio. The streaming company, which recently rolled out mobile games on the app, shared the news that it plans on making in-house games instead of outsourcing the majority of them as it has previously done.

Netflix says the game studio is the first that it will build from scratch and the studio will add to the company’s current investment in the video game industry. However, this is not Netflix’s first video game studio. In fact, the company purchased an already-developed studio earlier this year in Helsinki called Next Games.

Netflix also owns Night School Studio and Boss Fight Entertainment. All three studios have been working on games for the platform already. The new studio, which is still without a name, will act as the first video game development team that Netflix has built from the ground up. This will enable the company to have more creative control over the development of whatever titles they are working on.

Netflix says it is still very early days for the company. They can’t share details on the projects they are working on or future plans yet. However, we know that Netflix will develop games that integrate into their mobile app. These games are then released to all subscribers add-free and without in-app purchases.

It’s still early days, and we have much more work to do to deliver a great games experience on Netflix. Creating a game can take years, so I’m proud to see how we’re steadily building the foundation of our games studios in our first year, and look forward to sharing what we produce in the coming years.
