Haven’t used your Netflix account in over a year and still been paying for it? Firstly, what a waste of money. Secondly, Netflix will now automatically cancel your subscription for you so you don’t pay for something you’re not using. The streaming service announced that it will start automatically cancelling accounts that have been inactive for long periods of time.

This goes for users who have left their account dormant for a year or longer. Netflix will notify users that their accounts have been inactive through an email. In addition, they will be given the option to reactive their account with all previous watch history or in turn, deactivate the account.
Netflix announced that users who deactivate their account and then choose to reactivate it will be able to retain all their old viewing history and preferences.

At Netflix, the last thing we want is people paying for something they’re not using.”[/perfectpullquote]
The streaming provider will ask everyone who has not watched anything for a year since they joined to confirm whether or not they want to keep their membership. In addition, they will do the same for anyone who has stopped watching for more than two years. These notifications will start to arrive from this week. If members don’t confirm to renew their membership, Netflix will automatically cancel their subscription.
Netflix claims that inactive accounts make up around 0.5% of subscribers. While the number sounds low, it still constitutes to a few hundred thousands customers. I feel bad for those people who will soon get an email telling them they have been paying for something they have not used in over a year.
