Netflix Cancels its Stories Interactive Video Game Series

Netflix has cancelled its Netflix Stories interactive IP. The project was meant to turn popular Netflix TV shows and movies into mobile video game experiences where players would be able to interact with characters, make decisions, play mini-games, and more.

Netflix originally planned on turning some well-known shows into the Stories format. This includes Selling Sunset, Stranger Things, Emily in Paris, and some of the various dating shows the streaming platform has. By the sound of things, the games would play out like similar story apps with character creation and heavy narrative-driven experiences.

The biggest selling point of these Netflix Stories would be the extended experiences players would have outside of the TV shows and movies. Well, that isn’t going to happen now. The project has been cancelled. According to Pocket Gamer, Netflix wants to shift its focus to other games and will no longer be moving forward with these narrative experiences.

The decision has seemingly come from the company’s new president of games strategy, Alain Tascan, who has shuffled the development around. The company now says instead of maximising the platform’s existing IPs and using them in video games, it wants to create new, unique experiences and innovate on the types of games it has available on the platform.

If you don’t know by now, Netflix includes games in the subscription you pay. These games span many studios and franchises. Some of these games are actually pretty great, but you need a subscription to play them, and of course, they are only available on mobile.
