If The Netflix Adaptation of The Sandman Left You Craving More, Here's How You Should Read The Comics

Netflix Has Cancelled The Sandman

Netflix won’t work on a third season of The Sandman. The company announced that the upcoming second season will be the last content to come out of Neil Gaiman’s comic book series. This follows recent allegations of sexual assault that Gaiman is currently facing by eight women.

Last week, Netflix detailed its 2025 series and its 2025 movie lineup. The series lineup included The Sandman ahead of its debut later this year. However, Netflix says that the cancellation is because the studio knew it only had enough story left for one more season. Showrunner Allan Heinberg says:

The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season. We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.”

According to Variety, Netflix originally dragged its feet with announcing how many episodes of The Sandman Season 2 were ordered. At the time, Netflix confirmed the show would get a second season but referred to the show as “a continuation of The Sandman world”. This was one of two projects underway at Netflix; the other was Dead Boy Detectives – the show was cancelled after one season back in August.

We don’t know if The Sandman season 2 will wrap up the story in a reasonable manner or if the show’s cancellation has been done in haste following the ongoing controversy around Gaiman.

Amazon has made a similar decision to halt production on existing Gaiman projects. The studio has gone as far as to edit down the entire third season of Good Omens into one 90-minute-long episode. Disney has also cancelled its The Graveyard Book adaptation.

Dark Horse Comics announced that it would be dropping Gaiman’s Anansi Boys comic book series. At the same time, Amazon is currently working on its own adaptation of Anansi Boys. However, we don’t know if this will still happen.
