Netflix is Removing Its Interactive Titles

Netflix is cleaning out its interactive titles by removing twenty movies and shows. As of 1 December, the “Interactive Specials” on Netflix will be cut from 24 down to only 4.

The four movies include Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend, Ranveer vs. Wild with Bear Grylls, and You vs. Wild. The removal of the content comes after Netflix has seemingly given up on interactive content. The first movie launched back in 2017 with Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale. However, the popularity of the platform only really made it to the mainstream with Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.

Netflix also tried to launch an interactive trivia series with daily questions you answer with a friend. But the series didn’t land. Netflix says the interactive genre has served its purpose.

“The technology served its purpose, but is now limiting as we focus on technological efforts in other areas.”

The removal of the interactive titles is a misstep for Netflix. The streaming service has yet to find its footing outside of the traditional streaming media. The company has been investing millions in building a gaming platform that offers apps through the Netflix streaming app. While the lineup offers a robust selection of titles, the user engagement rate remains low.

Netflix also recently shut down its video game studio before it released its first game. The studio was described as a AAA game studio that planned on developing games based on popular Netflix shows and movies. The studio didn’t announce or release any title.
