Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for its upcoming live-action series adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender as part of Geeked Week. We also got an official release date of 22 February 2024 which is only a few months away.
The first teaser trailer for Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender is billed as a ‘teaser’ but we actually get to see a lot in this first glimpse including iconic characters, locations and potential action sequences. The casting, above all, looks incredibly promising, especially for the main trio consisting of Aang, Katara and Sokka played by Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio and Ian Ousley, respectively.
Other cast members include Daniel Dae Kim who has been perfectly cast as Fire Lord Ozai, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Uncle Iroh, Ken Leung as Commander Zhao and Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko. The story synopsis reads:
“Set in an Asiatic, war-torn world where certain people can ‘bend’ one of the four classical elements: water, earth, fire, or air. Aang is the ‘Avatar’, the only one capable of bending all the elements, and is destined to bring peace to the world from the Fire Nation. With his new companions Katara and Sokka, Aang sets out to master the elements while being pursued by the exiled Fire Nation prince Zuko, who seeks to regain his honor by capturing the Avatar.”
“Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action I feel like is going to bring everything you know and love about the original series back to life,” Cormier told Netflix.
The last attempt to turn Avatar: The Last Airbender into live-action was, uh, not great. The 2010 movie was directed by M. Night Shyamalan and is still widely panned as one of the worst adaptations of all time. Thankfully, Netflix’s attempt looks like a major step up and hopefully, the same energy and passion for the source material can translate to the screen just like this year’s well-received One Piece series.
Avatar: The Last Airbender debuts on 22 February 2024 on Netflix. Check out the teaser trailer below:
