Netflix has reduced the budget of its upcoming live-action BioShock movie, opting to make a “smaller version” with a “personal point of view” now. The movie will adapt 2007’s critically acclaimed game of the same name, though one would think that due to its grandiose underwater metropolis setting, a large budget would be a necessity. As it turns out, Netflix is looking to tell the story on a smaller scale.
As reported by Twitter/X account DiscussingFilm, Netflix said at San Diego Comic-Con that it had reduced the budget of the BioShock movie in favour of telling a more intimate story, if one can call it that. “We’re doing a much smaller version. It’s going to be a more personal point of view,” said Netflix. As far as we know, I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence is still attached to the project.
As expected, the response from fans was met with confusion and trepidation. BioShock‘s underwater city of Rapture is an iconic landmark in gaming – one that, on paper, would probably facilitate a much larger budget to capture the scale of the setting successfully. That’s not to mention the lavish set design that would need quite a bit of money to recreate.
A ‘BIOSHOCK’ film is still happening but Netflix has significantly reduced the budget.

However, it’s also worth noting that Netflix didn’t disclose the budget of the BioShock movie or how much it has actually been reduced. On the bright side, it seems like the project is still very much alive and happening despite being announced over two years ago. Netflix hasn’t set a release date for the BioShock movie yet – it has yet to enter production too.
