Last week, fans were disappointed to learn that Henry Cavill, who plays Geralt of Rivia on the Netflix series The Witcher, would be replaced after season 3 by Liam Hemsworth. Cavill made an official announcement on his social media about his departure from the show, but didn’t mention the exact reason why he was leaving. However, reports surfaced that Cavill apparently wasn’t happy with the writers deviating from the source material and mocking it. Now, fans want Cavill back and the writers replaced.
Fans have started a petition on Change.org to get Henry Cavill back as Geralt of Rivia, stating that he wasn’t leaving because of his commitments to playing Superman again. Instead, it was due to the writers and showrunners mocking the source material of the books (and games, though the games aren’t exactly source material).

Interestingly, Liam Hemsworth originally auditioned for the role of Geralt of Rivia back in 2018 but didn’t get the part, so hiring him as a replacement was a no-brainer according to Netflix. Hemsworth is also reportedly just as familiar with The Witcher source material as Cavill. However, he will only appear as Geralt from season 4 onwards, with Cavill stepping back to focus on other projects including his reprisal as Superman at DC and Warner Bros.
Petitions started by fans usually don’t lead to anything, but it has so far received over 160,000 signatures at the time of writing, inching its way closer to the 200,000 goal. If Cavill is set on leaving The Witcher series, especially over rumoured disputes with the showrunners and writers, then it’s unlikely he’ll return. It’s just as unlikely that Netflix will fire the writers and showrunners either, so we can only wait and see if anything comes of this.
The Witcher season 3 is set to air sometime in 2023.
