NetherRealm Studios recently released a heartfelt video featuring various developers from the company saying “thank you” to the fans. The video ended with Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon showing a short, cryptic teaser for what many believe is Mortal Kombat 12.
The latest video from NetherRealm Studios titled ‘Thank You from NetherRealm’ features developers from the studio showing their appreciation for the fans and players who made the studio’s projects successful. The video was meant to be a simple yet poignant response to NetherRealm’s status in the industry as one of the leading fighting game developers. However, Boon dropped a teaser at the end leaving fans in suspense.

The teaser at the end of the video simply shows an hourglass with grains of sand falling from it. One grain of sand explodes and that’s all we really got from NetherRealm Studios. The hourglass and sand is an obvious reference to Mortal Kombat and its time-travelling shenanigans so there’s no mistaking what the teaser is all about.
Fortunately, we also know that publisher Warner Bros Games has Mortal Kombat 12 locked and loaded to launch in 2023 since it accidentally revealed that the game was in development and scheduled to arrive this year via an earnings report. This sort of shattered all the secrecy that Boon and NetherRealm had been building up over the last year.
As for details on Mortal Kombat 12, we know absolutely nothing yet except an expected 2023 release window. Johnny Cage actor Andrew Bowen stated in a tweet last year that he was working on the next Mortal Kombat game, so at least we know Johnny Cage will be a character in the game. We can probably expect the franchise’s poster child Scorpion to make an appearance in the game and on all the promotional material again.
