In news absolutely nobody saw coming, a new Anaconda movie is reportedly in the works with Jack Black and Paul Rudd. According to a new report, Rudd and Black are in talks to stare in a “reimagining” of the 1997 cult classic action movie, which originally starred Jennifer Lopez, Jon Voight, Owen Wilson and Ice Cube. A director has also reportedly been eyed.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, comedic actors Paul Rudd and Jack Black might star in a new Anaconda movie. Tom Gormican, the director behind The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent starring Nicolas Cage, will apparently co-write and direct the movie for Columbia Pictures. Sources close to THR say the movie “involves a group of friends facing mid-life crises who are remaking their favorite movie from their youth. They head to the rainforest only to find themselves in a fight for their lives against natural disasters, giant snakes and violent criminals.”
Anaconda has quite a long history in the cinematic world, despite every movie being critically panned. The first Anaconda followed a group of researchers venturing into the Amazon rain forest to uncover the mysteries behind anacondas. As expected, things don’t go well. The movie was slammed by critics but it earned over $136 million at the worldwide box office, securing it for an eventual sequel, Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid, and three made-for-television follow-ups – one even starring David Hasselhoff.
South Africans are no stranger to Anaconda as the movie frequently aired on the broadcasting channel E-tv. It’s become a bit of a running joke, actually.
Not much is known about this new Anaconda adaptation, though casting Rudd and Black, two actors known for the comedy genre above all else, suggests that it might lean into comedy a bit more than full-blown horror like the original movie. We’ll have to wait for more information to arrive. In other movie news, a Pacific Rim origin prequel series is also in development.
