We know that Ubisoft is currently working on two new Assassin’s Creed games. The first is a live-service action game, Infinity set across an ever-expanding Assassin’s Creed universe with new additional stories and characters set to be added as new content. The other is a smaller game that Ubisoft is developing to tide gamers over until the release of this larger live-service version. New details on this “smaller” Assassin’s Creed game have now popped up online and while I have covered this game in quite a lot of detail in the past, the new information is quite different from previous leaks.
According to the leak, Assassin’s Creed 2023 will be called Assassin’s Creed: Mirage. The leak suggests that Ubisoft is planning to release the game in Q2 of 2023 between April and June. As previously reported, the game takes place between 860 and 870 in Baghdad during a historical event called the Anarchy of Samarra.

Players will take on the role of Basim in Assassin’s Creed Mirage and learn of the story that takes place before he arrived at the Hidden Ones. A large emphasis of Assassin’s Creed Mirage is how “back to basics” the game is. Ubisoft has reportedly dropped the large open-world exploration and RPG mechanics for a focused linear story and action-adventure gameplay. This sounds similar to the original Assassin’s Creed games.
Instead of a large open-world to explore, Baghdad is split into four smaller hubs each guarded by a boss which players will need to take down by completing missions. This sounds very similar to the general gameplay of Assassin’s Creed II and even Syndicate.
Other details suggest:
-
The game will be a return to basics, with strong inspiration from the first Assassin’s Creed.
-
Currently, the game does not have Modern Day except for a small scene where we see Basim entering the Animus. (but this may/should change by game release)
-
Several RPG elements removed: no more dialogue choices, no gender choice (obviously) and no more level system
-
The Gameplay would be slightly different from that of Valhalla, less raw and with new animations.
-
The Eagle Vision is back but so is the “drone bird”
-
Basim will be able to use the String Dagger to eliminate his opponents
-
There will be “Visions of Loki” for how Loki manifested into Basim’s body and consumed him.
-
Ubisoft is secretly preparing the remake of AC1 based on Rift/Mirage’s work. They will reuse a large part of the assets.
-
AC1 Remake should be integrated into a Season Pass which will also include DLC in Constantinople (when Basim meets Sigurd). It will be released a few months later.
-
Ubisoft will unveil the future of Assassin’s Creed on September 10 during Ubisoft Forward.
After this leak went up, various sources in the industry started backing it up. Even Jason Schrier says the leak is accurate which gives us hope of things to come. Ubisoft is set to host its “Future of Assassin’s Creed” stream in September where the company will reveal the next two games. The first is this Mirage game and the second is the live-service one.
A person familiar tells me parts of this new Assassin’s Creed leak are true (such as the name and the other stuff Bloomberg has already reported: spring 23, Baghdad, back to AC basics) and other parts are not (“multiple cities to explore”) https://t.co/qmM6UZtKnG
