New Avengers Game Reportedly in Development – Not From Square Enix

A new Avengers game is reportedly in development and it has nothing to do with Square Enix, apparently. After the failure of Marvel’s Avengers, which tanked so badly that it was eventually pulled offline without continued support from Crystal Dynamics, one would think that it would be a risky play to take a second shot at the IP. However, that’s exactly what’s happening, according to a new report.

Comic Basics reports that the new Avengers game won’t be connected to Marvel’s Avengers and isn’t being developed under Square Enix or Crystal Dynamics. The report unfortunately ends there, as there’s no indication of which studio is developing the game or which platforms it will be released on. It’s also hard to tell if this will be a smaller-scale project like a mobile game or a bigger AAA project, so we’ll simply have to wait for more information to surface.

Marvel’s Avengers launched back in 2020 to mostly mixed reviews from critics and fans. The game’s single-player campaign was pretty decent but players disliked the live service elements in the post-game which incentivised grinding for gear and XP. Fans also weren’t too kind to the character designs, which seemed unsure if they wanted to be the MCU or new takes on the heroes. Square Enix officially pulled the plug on Marvel’s Avengers support in January 2023 after a few DLC launches.

Fans are suggesting that the next rumoured Avengers game take some notes from Eidos Montreal’s Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which focused on telling a compelling single-player story with well-written characters and dialogue instead of trying to cram live service elements to retain players – as was the case with Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League too, this has proven to be a pretty divisive and risky play by gaming companies with very low chances of success. Let’s hope history doesn’t repeat itself.
