Larian Studios has released a massive new patch for its latest RPG, Baldur’s Gate 3, that includes over 1,000 fixes and changes. This includes a lot of gameplay balances, UI changes and combat tweaks. More importantly, certain romance options have been slightly reworked and in some cases, made harder. Those opting to pursue Lae’zel’s love story will discover that she now requires a lot more than just having a high approval to progress her romance.
The latest patch for Baldur’s Gate 3 is enormous and clocks in at over 11GB on PC and PS5. Larian added a number of quality of life features to the game including markers on the camp map for when companions want to speak to you (a welcomed addition) and even the ability to use soap to clean your companions after a bloody battle. However, Lae’zel’s adjusted romance requirements seem to be getting the most attention in the community.

Typically, players could easily romance Lae’zel by simply having a high enough approval rating with the Githyanki warrior. This results in one of the earliest sex scenes that players can unlock in the game – there’s even an entire dedicated speedrun category to just romancing Lae’zel, with the current record being 1 minute and 58 seconds. It’s much easier with a Red Dragonborn, hilariously enough.
However, the latest patch now requires players to not only have a high approval with Lae’zel but they must also earn her trust through their actions. As you can imagine, this mainly involves leaning heavily into the brash and chaotic side, initiating fights and avoiding being a kind, helpful soul. While the speedrunning community might be in shambles, fans have welcomed this change as it makes Lae’zel’s romance progression feel a lot more natural than simply being an easy no strings attached fling.

In other news, developer The Cinese Room says it’s taking some inspiration from Baldur’s Gate 3 for its own upcoming RPG, Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2. As for a physical release, Larian says it will consider releasing the game in retail stores if there’s enough interest.
