New gameplay footage for Crimson Desert, the upcoming action-RPG from Black Desert developer Pearl Abyss, will be shown next week during Gamescom. Unlike the MMO Black Desert, Crimson Desert will apparently be a single-player game with an open-world setting. It caught the attention of the community when it was first revealed back in 2019 thanks to its flashy gameplay and striking visuals.
We officially got a first look at gameplay for Crimson Desert during The Game Awards 2020, though little information has since come out of Pearl Abyss beyond some updates. What we do know is that it will be a single-player open-world action-RPG with a set protagonist named Macduff who is struggling with the burdens of leadership and his own murky past. It originally began development as a prequel to Black Desert before morphing into its own game.

New gameplay for Crimson Desert will likely be shown at Geoff Keighley’s Gamescom Opening Night Live, a live event that kicks off the expo every year with major updates on upcoming games, new reveals and much more. Since the pandemic, it has become one of the most-watched gaming shows of the year with big titles like Lies of P and Hogwarts Legacy being showcased last year.
As for a release date, Pearl Abyss CEO Jin-young Heo confirmed earlier this year that the game will launch towards the end of 2023 in time for the holiday season. Hopefully we’ll get a concrete release date at Gamescom to accompany an explosive new gameplay trailer.
Gamescom Opening Night Live will kick off at 11AM PT or 8PM SAST on 22 August. Don’t miss the latest trailers for upcoming games and more at the show.
Crimson Desert launches on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC in late 2023. Check out the first gameplay trailer below:
