According to Miyazaki, Elden Ring lasts around 30 hours if players don’t take too many side trips and die too often. He says that the world is divided up into six distinct portions with a unique gameplay approach and visual style. Each of these six regions contains a dungeon ruled by a demigod. Players can explore the world and head into each area in any order they wish.
They will know where they are thanks to a new world map that shows off their location and surrounding areas. However, once inside these regions and the dungeon in specific, there is no map available. It is unclear why players are instructed to go into each region and slay the demigod but we do know that the story revolves around becoming an Elden God. This then requires the Elden Ring. Perhaps players need to find specific items to craft the ring? This may tie into the original trailer’s focus on a hammer and forge.
The world is also filled with lots of side locations to discover and explore. These locations are teeming with danger, bosses and gear to find. Should you need a break from the main quest, you can then head into any of the catacombs, fortresses, or mini-dungeons scattered around the world.
“We wanted to give a free level of progression and exploration through the Lands Between, so there’s a lot of different ways. You won’t be able to access everything from the start, but there are a lot of different ways you can approach each area. And there’s a lot of freedom as to which order you tackle different areas as well.”
Elden Ring has a heavy emphasis on horseback riding. However, players can also walk around on foot. Miyazaki says that fall damage in Elden Ring is greatly reduced to allow players to freely explore the world without the fear of dying from a fall.
The game is fully playable with friends thanks to its co-op mode. Players can summon other characters into the game to take on bosses and explore the world. We don’t know what the specifics are yet in terms of player level cap and boss requirements.
Lastly, Miyazaki says that Elden Ring features a crafting system but he did not go into detail on how this works. By the sound of things, the game may include a larger crafting system that ties into the open-world design.
Elden Ring launches on 21 January 2022 for PS5, PS4, Xbox and PC. Catch up on the gameplay reveal trailer down below. We also recently covered more gameplay details regarding the game here.
