New details surrounding the unannounced Far Cry 7 from Ubisoft have leaked along with other information about the multiplayer title codenamed ‘Maverick’ meant to accompany the game’s launch. Ubisoft has yet to make an official announcement regarding the game but thanks to some new inside information, it seems like the developer is trying to change the Far Cry formula somewhat.
As revealed in a new report from Insider Gaming, there are two Far Cry games in development: Far Cry 7 and a multiplayer Far Cry game. We’ve known this information for a while but the report states that both games were originally the same project before being split into two different titles. The next mainline game is now under the codename ‘Blackbird’ while the multiplayer game is being called ‘Maverick’ behind the scenes.
It seems like both games were aiming for a 2025 release date but were apparently pushed back to 2026 “due to complexities in development.” Another recent report claimed that developers were patiently waiting for Rockstar Games to announce a release date for GTA 6 so they can avoid its launch window, so that could’ve been a factor here too but that’s just speculation on our part.
The report goes on to mention information about Far Cry 7‘s story that we’re already familiar with thanks to a leak back in September 2023. The protagonist will have to rescue his family but only has 24 real-time hours to do so (or 72 in-game hours). A watch that the protagonist wears will keep track of the time. The time concept isn’t anything new. It was previously used as a key mechanic in the Dead Rising games so it will be interesting to see how Ubisoft integrates it into a Far Cry title.
Finally, the report claims that both games have had a significant overhaul to their movement systems, now adding tactical spriting, sliding, vaulting and more..
