A new Godzilla movie is in the works from Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki. The director is once again teaming up with Toho to bring the iconic monster to the big screen, though there’s no word if the movie will be a direct sequel to Godzilla Minus One or if it will tell a new story.
The news was shared via Toho’s X account over the weekend, confirming that Takashi Yamazaki will return to direct the next Godzilla movie out of Japan. Yamazaki will also write the script for the untitled movie as well as oversee VFX. The announcement seems to coincide with the release time frame of Godzilla Minus One last year, which went on to win Best Visual Effects at the Academy Awards, marking the first-ever Oscar win for a Godzilla movie.
Beyond that, Yamazaki and Toho are remaining tight-lipped about the project for now. There’s no word on a release date or when the next movie will begin shooting either.

Godzilla Minus One was a critical and commercial success, garnering some of the highest reviews of 2023 next to Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. It told the story of a Japanese Kamikaze pilot who abandoned his duties, returning to a Japan that has been ravaged by World War II. In the wake of the devastation, Godzilla emerges from the ocean to cause chaos.
The plot description reads:
“Feeling as if he unfairly cheated death too many times, Shikishima, a surviving Kamikaze pilot, is attacked on Odo Island along with many war plane engineers by a gargantuan monster. After the engineers die because of Shikishima failing to distract the monster, an overwhelming amount of guilt weighs on him, especially after a homeless woman and a baby move into his home when he returns. Shikishima, now on a personal mission, teams up with a large group of veterans to finally take down the monster known as Godzilla.”
Godzilla Minus One is currently streaming on Netflix.
