New iOS 18.1 Beta 3 Brings AI Photo Clean Up Feature to iPhone

iOS 18.1 Beta 3 landed last night for iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. While the beta software has been in testing for about a month now, Apple hasn’t added any new AI features to it up until now. At launch, it included the revamped Siri and new writing tools and last night, the software got its photo editing Clean Up feature powered by AI.

The new tool gives users the ability to scrub away unwanted objects in photos. Upon downloading the on-device AI tool, users can tap on “edit” and then “clean up”. Here, they can brush across the photo and even tap on full objects that the AI tools think are unwanted. Within seconds, these objects vanish leaving behind a somewhat clean background.

So far, the tests have been both good and bad. When testing the tool myself, I found that bright photos with clear objects are easier to clean up. However, if you’re cleaning up an object near another with a similar colour, it does struggle to distinguish between the two. You can also continue to brush once an object has been removed to further add back detail to the photo and avoid the tiling effect.

Along with the clean-up feature, iOS 18.1 Beta 3 also brings summarised notifications to all apps. When enabled, your iPhone will now show a summary of your notification on the panel instead of the entire message. This works across all apps including WhatsApp, emails, Facebook, Instagram and more.

The tools are handy but of course, still need time to cook. Apple is expected to only release iOS 18.1 in October once testing concludes. The software will only be available for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. It will also support the soon-to-be-announced iPhone 16 lineup which is expected to be unveiled on 9 September.
