A new King Kong game, titled Skull Island: Rise of Kong, is being blasted online for not only being worse than this year’s abysmal The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, but also as a strong contender for worst game of the year. Developed by IguanaBee, the latest Kong game adaptation received overwhelmingly negative reviews when it launched earlier this week and quickly gained momentum online for how terrible it is.
Footage of Skull Island: Rise of Kong has been circulating social media and YouTube since yesterday with players sharing various clips and playthroughs of the game in action. Tragically, one look at the product will tell you all you really need to know about it. One user described it as “low effort shovelware” while another gave a simple warning to potential buyers: “DO NOT BUY THE NEW KING KONG GAME. IT IS A COMPLETE SCAM.”

This costs 40 dollars and is made by people that make low effort shovelware with big IP franchises.

Skull Island: Rise of Kong would’ve flown under the radar when it launched earlier this month but the internet was quick to pick up on it. It costs around $50 on the PlayStation Store which is even more baffling considering the unpolished, low-quality state of the game. Apparently the developer is known for releasing shovelware games based on big IPs so it’s not surprising that this latest effort aims to capitalise on Kong’s popularity in media.
It’s easy to see so why many players are declaring it the worst game of the year already. It takes a truly special kind of experience to outshine Gollum – as a reminder, Gollum was so bad, it became an internet meme and recent reports surfaced of the studio, Daedalic Entertainment, being accused of fostering a toxic work environment on top of underpaid staff.
Skull Island: Rise of Kong is now available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC. We don’t recommend buying it.
