In the best Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con leak yet, photos of a retail version of the upcoming controllers have been shared online. We have seen the controller in various forms over the past few months, but this is without a doubt the clearest and most detailed look thus far.
The photos were uploaded to a Chinese forum where the user shared two shots of the new Joy-Cons. The photos include a shot of the side and a shot of the back. While the back doesn’t really reveal much, it does include the regulator certifications confirming that Nintendo has already been granted approval around the world to sell the Joy-Cons in certain regions.
The back shot does double-up on the extra button claim. You can see the added paddle button, which is expected to act as a third trigger button on the console. These paddle buttons have been seen in model PC gaming handhelds over the past two years, so it makes sense that Nintendo added one to the upcoming Switch 2.
The side photo is likely the most interesting of the two. We get a clean look at the various changes in the Joy-Con 2. First off, there’s the new charging port. Situated in the middle of the controller, this socket will clip into the console’s body and charge the Joy-Cons. The controller will then stick onto the body using magnets, which are reportedly placed under the top and bottom circular pads.
Then there’s the laser or infrared sensor. The small hole next to the charger is reportedly a laser. Reports claim that the Joy-Con can be used as a mouse similar to the Lenovo Legion Go controller. The top and bottom circular pads provide smoothing while gliding the controller across a surface. However, there’s no real confirmation if this is the case.
The most obvious would be to say that this sensor is actually infrared. The original Joy-Cons include an infrared sensor that Nintendo has used in various games, so to add an upgraded sensor to the Joy-Con 2 would make sense.
Apart from that, the Joy-Cons look familiar. They are obviously a bit larger than the current design, and the blue finish confirms the existence of additional colours at launch.
To add to the legitimacy of this leak, users confirm that if you type the serial number of this “leaked” Joy-Con into the Nintendo website, the site accepts the number as a valid entry. So this is pretty much a real controller out there in the wild.
Nintendo is expected to announce the Switch 2 console very soon. Here’s a look at the Joy-Con
