New PlayStation Portable Prototypes Reportedly Already Out in The Wild

Sony’s new PlayStation Portable may already be much further in development than we thought. Last month, Bloomberg reported that Sony was working on a new PSP to rival the current and upcoming portable gaming handhelds on the market. According to other sources, this new PlayStation Portable was being developed with AMD and would include the Z1 Extreme chip. It is described as a “PS4-like portable device”.

Reports claimed that Sony was “looking into it” and discussions were underway between AMD. In addition, internal testing was being done. However, a new report suggests that this Sony PSP might already be in the hands of a few developers and staff.

Digital Foundry’s John Linnemen says is it interesting to see the whole story around the new PSP make its rounds given how he has heard about it for some time now. He suggests that this portable isn’t as “new” as everyone thinks and most reports make the device sound “further out” than it actually is.

He doesn’t confirm anything else about the unit other than the possibility of prototype units already out there for testing:

What’s interesting about this is we actually heard about this handheld some months ago from a couple of sources specifically. So, we’re not in the business of leaking things, but it’s interesting that this finally sort of started to make its rounds because it just sort of confirmed what we had seen and heard off the record about this existing, which is cool. So, to me, this sort of just strengthens the notion that yeah, they’re very much working on something. And this article makes it seem like it’s even further out than I actually thought based on that, so I’m not sure where it’s going, I think there’s like prototype stuff out there possibly. There’s still a lot of questions for this, but it does feel like this future of offering a handheld and a home console option is very likely at this point.”

My take is that while the recent reports make the new PSP sound like it is only in pre-production, it might be further into development than we think. Sony essentially started working on the new PlayStation Portable after or during the development of the PlayStation Portal. This would give the PSP a few years of work already. However, this is all unconfirmed at this point.
