A new PlayStation State of Play event is rumoured to take place in February 2025. Sony has mostly kept its plans hidden about its release schedule for the year, excluding Ghost of Yotei. A new report suggests that PlayStation could be gearing up for a new showcase very soon, hopefully with more exciting first-party announcements.
The report comes from leaker and insider NateTheHate, who claims that PlayStation will host a new State of Play showcase in February. It’s a rather safe bet, all things considered, as PlayStation typically tends to host a State of Play early in the year to lay out its plans for the next several months. We know that Ghost of Yotei, possibly the biggest PlayStation exclusive launching this year, is planned for a 2025 release but beyond that, no dates have been nailed down yet.
Sony recently cancelled multiple live service projects including a multiplayer God of War title that was reportedly in development at Demon’s Souls remake studio Bluepoint. The other canned title was an unknown Sony Bend game. PlayStation has had more misses than hits with its push into live service territory – just last year, Concord notoriously bombed in one of the biggest video game blunders of all time. There’s a dark cloud now hanging over upcoming live service games like Fairgame$ and Bungie’s Marathon.
Sony isn’t the only company that’s busy in the coming weeks. Xbox will host a new Developer Direct on 23 January that spotlights South of Midnight, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, DOOM: The Dark Ages and an unannounced new game. Nintendo will also reportedly host a new Direct next month that focuses on Switch 1 games, despite recently announcing the long-rumoured Switch 2 console. A deeper dive into the next-gen hardware will take place on 2 April.
Of course, we recommend taking the State of Play news with a grain of salt until we have confirmation directly from Sony.
