Resident Evil 9, or as it’s officially titled Resident Evil Requiem, made a splash during Summer Game Fest this year when it closed off the show, setting a February 2026 release date in the process. The upcoming survival horror title from Capcom has received a batch of new details about the gameplay and bits of the story – chief among them being the feature that allows you to freely switch between first-person and third-person mode.
Past Resident Evil games have either stuck to first-person or third-person mode (at least at launch before updates implemented those changes) but Resident Evil Requiem will let players freely switch between those perspectives from the get-go. That’s according to previews from press who got to try a 30-minute demo of the game last weekend. New details confirm that the demo starts off from a first-person viewpoint like Resident Evil 7 and Village before changing to third-person as it goes on.
However, there’s an option in the menu that lets you toggle between the perspectives whenever you want, though many outlets noted that the horror elements seemed to be far more effective via first-person mode. As previously speculated, Grace Ashcroft is also the protagonist of the game and the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft from Resident Evil Outbreak. Grace is an FBI agent investigating a series of grissly murders possibly connected to the fateful events of Raccoon City several years ago.
The demo puts Grace in Wrenwood Hotel as she must navigate the desolate corridors, flip switches and avoid a terrifying creature that’s constantly chasing her (outlets have described this monster as a Mr. X or Nemesis type that will relentlessly pursue the player, taking on a similar appearance to a xenomorph). Grace can heal herself with syringes instead of the usual assortment of herbs. To avoid the monster’s detection, players have to run and find a hiding place.
It’s heavily speculated that Leon S. Kennedy will fill the role of the combat-centric playable character while Grace will be more akin to Ashley from Resident Evil 4; mostly defenceless and better suited for puzzle-solving.
Resident Evil Requiem launches on 27 February 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
