New Sonic The Hedgehog Game Teased for The Game Awards

A new Sonic the Hedgehog game is being teased for a big reveal at The Game Awards this year, if recent domain registrations and Twitter exchanges are anything to go by. Judging by the registered domain, it looks like this might be the open-world Sonic game first teased during Sonic’s anniversary event, which is reportedly titled Sonic Frontiers.

As reported by Video Games Chronicle, a recent Twitter exchange between The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley and Sonic the Hedgehog’s official Twitter account raised some eyebrows. If that wasn’t evidence enough that Sonic is heading to The Game Awards, a new domain was recently registered on the official Sonic the Hedgehog website with the URL frontiers.sonicthehedgehog.com.

If you head over to the website now, it simply brings up a 304 Forbidden link, though it will presumably go live following The Game Awards this week. If you’ve been following recent Sonic news, Sega trademarked the name Sonic Frontiers in November, which is likely to be the official title of the anticipated open-world Sonic game.

Sonic Frontiers is apparently being developed for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC. It’s also being touted as a major leap for Sonic into the new generation, adopting an open-world design for the first time in the series. The goal, according to its developers, is to return Sonic to form and build something as beloved as Sonic Adventure. We’ll just have to wait and see what they have planned, but it’s highly likely that Sega’s blue mascot is set to make an appearance at The Game Awards this week.

The Game Awards airs on 9 December 2021 from 4:30 pm PT / 7:30 pm ET / 02:30 CAT (10 Dec).
