New Tomb Raider Game Being Made in Unreal Engine 5

Yesterday marked a big day for Epic Games which officially launched its latest Unreal Engine 5 to the public. The engine, which was first announced in 2020, has been in beta for almost two years and while some developers have been using it for new games, the platform has been closed to the majority of public studios out there.

Thankfully, Unreal Engine 5 is now officially available to the world and anyone can download it even if you’re not a developer. One studio that has been working on the engine already is Crystal Dynamics who has been developing the next Tomb Raider game.

I don’t need to sugarcoat the power of Unreal Engine 5 for you. Previous demos showcased stunning worlds and intense environments that will take games to the next level. Crystal Dynamics confirmed that the next instalment in the Tomb Raider series is currently being built in Unreal Engine 5.

While details are scarce at the moment on the game, the studio says that they have just kicked off the development of the next Tomb Raider game. The goal of the studio is to develop next-level experiences with cinematic-styled gameplay visuals and the only way to achieve this would be to use Unreal Engine 5.

Keep in mind that we already heard the next Tomb Raider game was in development in 2021. So perhaps the studio had already begun working on the beta build of Unreal Engine 5 during the early production of the game. Either that or perhaps the game was simply in pre-production.

Communication and community manager at Square Enix, Meagan Marie opened up about the new Lara Croft during an interview last year. She confirmed that the new Lara Croft would be a more mature character who has grown and evolved with the player base.
