SEGA executives have confirmed that a new Virtua Fighter game is in development at the company. Unfortunately, SEGA didn’t provide any other details on the project including a release time frame or window. The new fighting game is part of SEGA’s push to develop several new games based on its large library of existing IP including new titles for Jet Set Radio, Shinobi and more.
Speaking with Video Games Chronicle, executive VP and head of SEGA’s Global Transmedia Group Justin Scarpone confirmed that work has begun on a new Virtua Fighter game alongside a number of other revived projects including Crazy Taxi, Shinobi, Jet Set Radio and Streets of Rage. Scarpone didn’t provide any more details beyond that but at least we know that SEGA’s flagship fighting game franchise isn’t dead and buried just yet.
“So we have a suite of titles in development right now that fall into that legacy bucket, which we announced last year at The Game Awards,” said Scarpone. “Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and we have another Virtua Fighter being developed. And so all that’s very exciting.”
SEGA has been having quite a stellar year so far. In 2024, the publisher released critically acclaimed games like Persona 3 Reload, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth and Metaphor: ReFantazio. Sonic X Shadow Generations also seems to have performed well with fans and critics. Outside of gaming, SEGA also released the Knuckles television series and is set to release Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in December, which stars Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog.
The description for Sonic the Hegdehog 3 reads:
“Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before. With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.”
