Battlefield 2042 Review - Shallow Warfare

Next Battlefield Game Reportedly Going Open-World

The next Battlefield game is reportedly taking the open-world approach. This follows publisher EA’s comments from earlier this year claiming that the new title would be one of its “most ambitious projects to date” and “another tremendous live service” shooter. Developer DICE is looking to scale up the scope of the Battlefield franchise, it seems.

As discovered by Tech4Gamers, a recent job listing at EA seeking a Senior Environment Artist for the next Battlefield game requires the applicant to have some experience working on open-world projects, hinting that the next entry in the shooter franchise could be aiming for an open-world setting.

Some of Battlefield 2042‘s maps were considerably large compared to the maps from older titles, so it wouldn’t be surprising if this is the approach EA wants to take for the next Battlefield title. To address the elephant in the room, EA could also be looking at Call of Duty: Warzone, which features a kind of open-world map in its battle royale setting, for inspiration behind this decision.

It’s also possible that EA could scale the shooter to not just be a playground of destruction, possibly creating a living, breathing world for players to explore. It would be quite a deviation from previous titles but certainly as “ambitious” as EA CEO Andrew Wilson claims it will be. Something like that hasn’t been attempted before in the series and it might be the shake-up that the franchise desperately needs right now, especially after the failure of Battlefield 2042.

Back in January, a report claimed that the next Battlefield could also have the ‘most realistic destruction effects’ in gaming, suggesting that the possible open-world environments will be fully destructible in some way. It sounds a lot like Red Faction, another shooter where massive environments were fully destructible right down to dropping entire buildings.
