In celebration of N7 Day 2023, BioWare released a cryptic new teaser video for the next Mass Effect – the first potential footage we’ve seen of the game since its reveal trailer back in 2020. The teaser isn’t long, clocking in at just 30 seconds, but it has already raised plenty of questions in the community about the next game’s possible hero or villain.
The teaser for the next Mass Effect shows a cloaked figure, donning the familiar N7 red stripes and what appears to be a futuristic Daft Punk-esque helmet, walking down a hallway. Speculation has run rampant about who this figure actually is, ranging from the return of Commander Shepard to the next game’s fresh protagonist, or potentially its main villain. It will probably be a few more years until we see more footage of the game as BioWare’s efforts are currently tied up in Dragon Age: Dreadwolf first.
Mass Effect franchise director and executive producer Mike Gamble released a statement yesterday, only raising more questions:
“Whether it’s one of the many who have been here since the original game’s launch or those recently joining us at BioWare, we are all incredibly lucky to be envisioning this future. That process is equal parts rewarding and challenging. We’ve asked ourselves many of the same questions you’ve asked us over the years! What happened to everyone you know and love in the games? Who really died? Who had kids with whom? What does a baby volus sound like? What about all the galaxies? The endings! What the heck is going on with our asari scientist-turned-Shadowbroker? What about S— nevermind…you get the idea.”
That last bit “What about S—” has led fans to believe that Gamble was about to say Shepard before cutting himself off, which would make sense as Commander Shepard’s fate was left uncertain after the ending of Mass Effect 3. Or at least, the infamous secret ending that implies Shepard actually survived the final assault against the Reapers.
