Developer BioWare recently celebrated N7 Day with a new teaser for the next Mass Effect, showing the first look at in-engine footage. While the internet is still buzzing with speculation about what it could all mean, the answers probably won’t arrive for the next half-decade or more. A new report claims that the next Mass Effect isn’t expected to launch until 2029 or later.
The report originates from journalists Jeff Grubb of Giant Bomb and Tamoor Hussain of GameSpot. According to both of their sources, the next Mass Effect is still a very long way off. At the moment, all of BioWare’s efforts seem to be focused on getting Dragon Age: Dreadwolf past the finish line first. The anticipated fantasy RPG is still without a release date, though previous reports suggest that it might be on track to release next year, if all goes well.
However, the long-awaited return of Mass Effect is a lot further away than anticipated. Grubb stated:
“You want some original reporting? This game is just nowhere near coming out. I was told that when they revealed Dragon Age: Dreadwolf in 2018, this is similar in terms of timeline. That was announced in 2018 and we’re not getting that game until maybe next year. So now do the math for that, and we’re talking 2029 for Mass Effect 5.”
Hussain replied, “I’ve heard some things as well, and this game is so far away. It is so far in another galaxy right now.”
Grubb added that the recent Mass Effect teaser was only created to assure fans that the game is still in development rather than being a tease of its release coming soon. “When I asked, it was just like, ‘hey, is this just because they have to do something for N7 Day?’ Yes. For this thing, that’s all this is,” said Grubb.
Since the next Mass Effect was initially announced back at The Game Awards in 2020, BioWare has only dropped small teasers every year for the game. The latest teaser was the most substantial drop yet as it actually showed some in-engine footage and the appearance of a mysterious figure that has left the community speculating about their true identity. Sadly, if these reports are true, then be prepared to wait a very long time to play the game – possibly until the next console generation.
