The next PlayStation State of Play event is rumoured to take place on 24 September 2024. This follows a report from journalist and insider Jeff Grubb who previously reported on a potential State of Play, not a Showcase, happening this month. It seems that Grubb has now doubled down on this rumour, setting a concrete date for the new event.
Sony’s next State of Play is “almost certainly happening on the 24th”, said Jeff Grubb in a recent episode of Game Mess Mornings. Grubb claims that PlayStation could use the event to officially announce Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, which was leaked yesterday by the ESRB, along with another remaster that he says is “even less exciting.” Whatever is on the table, we’ll definitely know on 24 September.
There’s a lot riding on this State of Play to at least pave the road for any potential first-party PS5 exclusives from some of Sony’s biggest studios like Sucker Punch Productions, Bluepoint, Santa Monica Studio and Naughty Dog – we know that these studios are working on new projects, though there has been radio silence from PlayStation about them.
However, the State of Play will likely focus on third-party games and a few less-impactful announcements than the AAA first-party games. LEGO Horizon Adventures is still set to launch this November and Astro Bot recently released to rave reviews online, so Sony could capitalise on that momentum and marketing. Additionally, there’s also a chance we’ll get another glimpse of Marathon, the PvP extraction shooter from Destiny developer Bungie, which PlayStation is apparently considering charging $40 for like Helldivers 2 or Concord.
Sony might be saving some of its biggest announcements for a much larger Showcase event at a later stage, though we speculate that most of their marketing for the remainder of the year will focus on the PS5 Pro, which launches in November.
