Nier 15th Anniversary Event Announced For April

Square Enix has announced a 15th anniversary event for Nier to celebrate the series’ legacy. Yoko Taro and other key developers that worked on the Nier games will be in attendance, leading some to speculate that there might be a long-awaited sequel announcement on the way since 2017’s Nier: Automata.

The Nier 15th anniversary event can be livestreamed on 19 April at 6pm JST / 9am GMT / 1am PST or 11am SAST. Square Enix somewhat set expectations for fans hoping for a huge new game announcement, stating that the event will focus on upcoming events and merch, a mini concert and a discussion between developers consisting of producer Yosuke Saito, composer Keiichi Okabe, game designer Takahisa Taura and director Yoko Taro.

It seems like the event might be a bit more lowkey than fans are expecting, though there is always the slight chance that the event could drop a surprise announcement for a new game. After all, Square Enix also set expectations for the franchise’s 10th anniversary stream where the company revealed Nier Replicant out of nowhere.

It’s been seven years since Nier: Automata launched, leaving players hanging on the possibility of a continuation or sequel eventually being made. Square Enix and Yoko Taro have been pretty tight-lipped about any new title being in development. Technically, 2021’s Nier Replicant was a remaster of the first Nier game so it wasn’t exactly “new.”

Back in February 2024, Yoko Taro pulled a stunt during a special concert in London where he rallied the crowd to cheer if they wanted a sequel to Nier: Automata. Naturally, the crowd erupted in cheers, yells and claps.

For more concrete evidence, Nier series producer Yosuke Saito revealed back in November 2023 that a new mainline title was on its way, though we’ve heard no updates since then. All this teasing should eventually lead to something, right? We’ll find out on 19 April.
