An anime adaptation of Square Enix and PlatinumGames’ popular JRPG NieR Automata has been announced. It’s being produced by Sword Art Online studio A-1 Pictures and distributor Aniplex, though no other information was provided.
In celebration of its five-year anniversary, PlatinumGames announced that NieR Automata would receive an anime adaptation. Judging by the concept art provided, it will once again feature 2B and 9S and will likely be a retelling of the original game’s story.

The studio behind the project is A-1 Pictures, best known for their anime adaptations of Sword Art Online, Erased, Fairy Tail, Kaguya-sama: Love is War and Blue Exorcist, among many other popular shows.
Rumours about an anime adaptation of NieR Automata originally sprung up earlier this month, though it now seems those reports were true.
There’s no official release date for the anime project, so fans will have to wait a while longer to hear about more news. The anime currently has a live website and Twitter page, with more updates expected to roll out here so keep an eye out.
NieR Automata first released in 2017 and was praised for its fast-paced gameplay, multi-layered story and complex characters. 2B became a fan-favourite protagonist online with plenty of fan art made for her over the years. As of June 2021, total sales for the game had exceeded six million units, making it one of PlatinumGames’ most successful releases.
A-1 Pictures has the difficult task of adapting NieR Automata into an anime as the game’s multiple endings all contribute to the overall experience of the narrative. However, they already have some experience working on game-to-anime projects as they previously worked on Persona 4: The Golden Animation as well as Ace Attorney. Fans also recognize their work on The Seven Deadly Sins and Fate/Apocrypha.
