Nintendo has finally announced the Nintendo Switch 2 console. Dubbed the “successor” to the original Nintendo Switch, the new gaming console was announced in a stylish new trailer showcasing the console design and Joy-Cons.
Nintendo clearly wants people to know this is a successor to the Switch, as the trailer shows the original console transform into the new version. The display slims down, new ports appear, and new buttons are formed.
The Joy-Cons also have a brisk transformation as they go from the older models into the newly improved versions. We see them scooting around the table using the so-called “mouse functionality”. There’s a quick look at the wrist attachments during this shot too.
The reveal trailer gives us a glimpse at the new Mario Kart game. We also see the new controller dock that lets you attach the Joy-Cons to it and turn them into a gamepad. The Switch 2 dock itself is also much the same, with a slightly added curve to the outer edges.
The most important part of this all is the release date. Nintendo hasn’t announced one, sadly. The company says a “special” Direct will take place on 2 April 2025 to reveal more about the console. No pricing has been announced yet either.
The company also confirmed that the console is backwards compatible with Nintendo Switch games. The Switch 2 plays “both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games” according to the website. There’s are also some “experience” events set up in the months ahead to gets hands-on with the console. They are taking place in New York, Los Angeles and Dallas.
Of course, we’ll keep you updated on any developments that come from this announcements as well as any local news related to South Africa. You can visit the official Nintendo Switch 2 website to stay updated on new announcements around the console.
