Nintendo is working on another Switch hardware revision. We reported last week that the company began production on a new codename device which many claims is a more powerful version of its popular hybrid console. According to Bloomberg, Nintendo is now asking developers to make their games 4K-ready in preparation for the console.

PS5 Kena: Bridge of Spirits Takes 2 Seconds to Launch Into The Game

The report touches on a few things. Firstly, Nintendo is raising its Switch production to 30 million units for its fiscal year. This is after the company has struggled to keep up with the demand. Around the world, the Switch console is hard to find with stock shortages affecting Japan the most. Back in August, Nintendo raised the orders to 25 million. This was thanks to the success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and the COVID-19 pandemic increasing the demand for gaming systems. However, the company has now further boosted that order by another 5 million and assemblies are now operating at 120% to meet the demand.

Bloomberg claims there are multiple factors involved. The Nintendo Switch Lite helped broaden the appeal of the console. However, this arrived at the wrong time when the company’s production was stifled by the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. It took a few months but Nintendo’s supply chain is now fully operational.

Nintendo is making preparation to launch an upgraded Switch model in 2021. In addition, the company is planning a large roster of games to go alongside the device including patching graphical enhancements for current ones. Bloomberg claims that Nintendo has asked multiple developers to make their games 4K-ready. This suggests that there is a resolution boost on the way for the console.

We don’t know much about the device yet. However, reports claim the upgraded Nintendo Switch model will include a range of improvements to CPU and storage. These enhancements may point to the company moving into the 4K era of gaming. But don’t get your hopes up just yet. Chances that the device supports 4K resolution while in handheld are slim. It could be just a 4K docked device. We will have to see what happens.
