Nintendo has clarified some confusion surrounding the Switch 2 Edition of games, confirming that the physical card will come with both the original game, which can be played on the first Switch, as well as the next-gen upgrade. Previous rumours claimed that the Switch 2 Edition boxes would only include the Switch 1 card and a download code for the next-gen upgrade but this doesn’t seem to be the case after all.
In a recent statement to Vooks, Nintendo clarified that players who purchase the Switch 2 Edition of games, such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, will get access to the original game as well as the next-gen upgrade on one card as opposed to a download code. However, Nintendo also stressed that “some publishers may release Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games as download codes in physical packaging, with no game card.”
With all the crazy rumours surrounding how Switch 2 Edition games would work, many believed that due to the rumoured download code, you wouldn’t be able to trade Switch 2 versions of games with friends or retailers. Fortunately, the next-gen upgrade will already be on the card along with the original game, meaning you can buy that specific edition and still be able to lend it out to someone who only owns the Switch 1.
In related news, Nintendo revealed that stock of the next-gen console has already been shipped to the United States. However, US retailer GameStop announced that Nintendo decided to halt pre-orders of the console in the US until it can properly assess the tariffs and the proper course of action to take, though it’s currently available to pre-order worldwide including South Africa. US buyers can still opt to pre-order the console through Nintendo, though this requires certain criterias to be met first.
