Nintendo has touched on why the company decided to use an LCD n the new Switch 2 console after dabbing around with OLED tech on the Switch OLED. Display enthusiasts will know that OLED does have some fantastic benefits for gaming, especially portable gaming. While Mini-LED is slowly overtaking OLED when it comes to brightness, the tech isn’t really ready for handheld gaming.
The Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch LCD screen that is larger than the 6.2-inch LCD found in the original, 7-inch OLED in the Switch OLED and of course, 5.5-inch LCD in the Switch Lite.
However, the size isn’t the only upgrade. The display is also now a wide colour gamut LCD which means it is much brighter and has more colour range than your standard LCD. It also supports HDR as a result. In addition to this, NVIDIA has confirmed it supports VRR thanks to its custom GPU and 120Hz refresh rate.
Some gamers have complained about the use of LCD in the Switch 2 given how popular OLED was on the original console. Nintendo has responded.
The company says that since the release of the first Switch, there has been a lot of advancements in LCD technology. After looking at the LCD options available on the market, Nintendo decided that it was advanced enough to deliver what the company wanted with the console.
Much of this is related to the higher refresh rate, HDR and VRR support. This technology is at times limited and expensive on OLED. So Nintendo says the move back to LCD was in order to keep costs down while at the same time, check all the boxes.
