Nintendo hasn’t confirmed that the Switch 2 Joy-Cons feature a new mouse ability. However, the reveal trailer and multiple reports from accessory makers have claimed that the new controllers can be placed down on a surface and used as a mouse.
Nintendo is likely cooking up this feature as something unique on the system. Perhaps we’ll see games take advantage of the tech to allow games to be played with the mouse instead of the usual analogue stick. Imagine playing a first-person shooter at your desk on the Switch 2 and completely changing up the experience, unlike any console on the market.
It seems the patent for the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons has gone public, and it shows how you’re meant to hold the controller when using it as a mouse. According to the images, your hand wraps around the top of the Joy-Con, and you’ll use your index finger on top of the L or R button and your middle finger on the ZR or ZL button.
The image also shows the user’s thumb on the analogue stick. It is unclear if the stick is functional as part of this mouse feature or if that is just where you’ll keep it. I can imagine having the ability to click on the stick as an additional button or perhaps move the stick around as another function.
At least we know the feature is real. How Nintendo plans to use this mouse feature is still unclear. The company is expected to debut the Nintendo Switch 2 in full detail on 2 April. In the meantime, you can now sign up at various retailers in South Africa to be notified on console updates and new information.
