We know that the next console from Nintendo (dubbed the Switch 2 by fans) is coming but there’s no indication of when it will actually be announced. We have only rumours and speculation to go on and this lateast report suggests that Nintendo is apparently rushing a Switch 2 announcement before 16 January 2025 due to a wave of leaks getting out of hand.
The report comes from samushunter2, which many commenters on Reddit don’t deem very reliable yet. However, the user’s latest tweet seems to be making the rounds online. Admittedly, it also makes a bit of sense. They claim that Nintendo wants to get ahead of the recent wave of Switch 2 leaks, especially of accessories, by announcing the new console before 16 January. This is an oddly specific date and our best guess is due to Donkey Kong Returns HD which releases on the same day. That said, it’s not exactly relevant.
“Nintendo may advance the next-generation Switch reveal with an announcement that possibly could come before DK,” said the user. “This is to address recent leaks especially of accessories to ensure official news for the public. The remaining announcements of Switch games may come a little later.”

A report from November claimed that the Switch 2 reveal would happen in January followed by a launch in March, though it’s highly unlikely that the console will launch so soon after its announcement. Our best guess is that Nintendo will reveal the hardware first and host another event at a later date that focuses on new exclusive games and possible launch titles, with a release possibly set for summer or the second half of 2025.
