The Nintendo Switch 2 is coming up fast this June, packing in a few new games that will be readily available at launch including Mario Kart World and a number of Switch 2-enhanced games from the previous generation. However, there’s a notable lack of a new 3D Mario game. Nintendo has now openly addressed this with a simple “stay tuned”, teasing a possible new entry in the franchise coming sooner rather than later.
Not counting re-releases, the last flagship 3D Mario game was 2017’s critically acclaimed Super Mario Odyssey, which will be eight years old this October. Fans believe it’s about time that Nintendo delivers a new entry. Luckily, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser has an answer. “Stay tuned,” Bowser told CNN. “You know, we have a long, long catalogue, and a long list of (intellectual property) that I’m sure will make its way to the platform.”
Nintendo could develop a pretty exciting new 3D Mario game with the extra power afforded by the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware, maybe even roping in some of its new features like the Joy-Con mouse. Unfortunately, Bowser didn’t elaborate much on his answer but reading between the lines, it seems like Nintendo is well aware of the high demand for a new 3D Mario entry and has probably been working on something over the last few years.
In the meantime, Switch 2 players will still get a healthy dose of games this year including the long-awaited Mario Kart World, the first entry in the series to take on an open-world. Donkey Kong Bananza is also shaping up to be a must-play for Switch 2 owners.
