The Nintendo Switch 2 will support 4K output to some degree. While we are eagerly waiting for Nintendo to share the official specs and features of the console later today during a special Direct, information on the dock’s display capabilities has leaked online.
According to a user on Famiboards, the Switch 2 comes packed with a Realtek RTD2175N-CG DisplayPort v1.4 to HDMI 2.1 protocol converter, which allows the dock to output 4K60Hz. This seemingly confirms that the Switch 2 will have some sort of 4K output feature when you dock the console.
The Realtek RTD2175N-CG is essentially a piece of tech that converts DisplayPort 1.4 to HDMI 2.1 signal. If you think about your standard DisplayPort to HDMI cables, it has DisplayPort on one end and HDMI on the other. This Realtek RTD2175N-CG is basically that but custom-built for the Switch 2 dock.
The DisplayPort 1.4 in question here is the USB-C connector that the Switch 2 will slide into when you dock the console. The HDMI 2.1 is then the output connector, which you’ll use to connect your TV or monitor to the console.
According to the specs on the Realtek RTD2175N-CG, it supports the following:
- Chipset: RTD2173
- Compliant with DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI HDCP 2.2/1.4, HDR 10
- Video resolution: 720p, 1080p, 4K30Hz, 4K60Hz,4K120Hz (w/DSC), 8K30Hz and 8K60Hz (w/DSC)
- Audio Support: 7.1-ch PCM
- Bandwidth: Up to 32.4Gbps
Two big changes here are the 4K support and, of course, HDR. The original Switch didn’t have either of these features. While it was cool at first when the console launched back in 2017, playing the OG Switch on a 4K HDR TV now is kind of an eyesore. So the bump to 4K with HDR implementation will be a big change for Nintendo.
The company is expected to debut all the Switch 2 features later today during a special Direct stream. You can tune in at 15:00 SAST. Find out more about it here.
