The Nintendo Switch 2 launched last week to some rather impressive launch day sales. According to early reports from the first few days of launch, over 3 million consoles were sold within the first two days of release.
The stats reportedly cover Thursday, 5 June, and Friday, 6 June, and claim that Nintendo’s early pre-order adoption and day-one purchases for the console surpass 3 million units. These numbers also don’t cover the weekend sales, which are likely to be a few million too.
At the moment, the Nintendo Switch 2 is the fastest-selling console in a 24-hour period in history. No other gaming hardware has managed to sell 3 million units within 24 hours.
Previously, Sony’s PS4 console held the record with 1 million units sold on launch day. The console went on to sell 4.5 million units within the first month, so while its launch day sales were high, it took a month to sell what the Nintendo Switch 2 will likely sell within its launch week.
Various gamers have also been surprised to see the Nintendo Switch 2 being readily available and in stock at stores around the world (bar Japan). The console is stocked at most retailers with units available on shelves without any pre-booking or ordering.
Nintendo has previously confirmed that the company would ensure that the Switch 2 stock would meet the demand, and so far, it seems like that is the case. While pre-orders started off a bit rough with scalpers and “invitation-only” orders being allowed, the launch has seen promising results for the brand.
Nintendo President Doug Bowser told CBS on the launch day of the console that the company would provide a steady supply of units to retailers across the globe.
In South Africa, the Nintendo Switch 2 is also readily available in-store. Multiple retailers confirmed to me that they have at least a few units of extra stock available for walk-in and online orders. The console launched last week, and even saw hundreds of fans flock to the Nintendo Branded Store in Sandton City to pick up their new console.
Nintendo has yet to confirm any sale figures from the launch week of the Switch 2. We will likely get an update in the coming weeks once the dust settles on one of the busiest weeks in gaming.
