Nintendo Switch Next-Gen Console 2024 Second Half

Nintendo Switch 2 Might Not Launch Before April 2025

The next Nintendo console, dubbed the Nintendo Switch 2 online, might not launch before April 2025. According to new reports, the Switch successor is seemingly set to launch during Nintendo’s next financial year, meaning it won’t arrive anytime from now until March next year.

According to GamesIndustry.biz journalist and head Chris Dring, developers have reportedly already been briefed not to expect the Switch 2 hardware to release during its current fiscal year, which ends in March 2025. This follows a statement back in May from Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa who confirmed that the Switch successor will be revealed sometime before March next year.

Dring stated:

“No developer I’ve spoken to expects it to be launching this financial year. In fact, they’ve been told not to expect it in the [current] financial year. A bunch of people I spoke to hope it’s out in April or May time, still early next year, not late. I don’t think any of us wants a late launch for Switch 2 because we all want a new Nintendo console, everyone gets very excited for it, and we don’t want that crunch of Grand Theft Auto 6 and Switch and all that kind of stuff on top of each other.”

The Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017, well within its fiscal year, though we probably shouldn’t expect the same timeline from Nintendo’s next console. Since Nintendo doesn’t usually conform to a specific release month or window like PlayStation and Xbox (which typically launch new consoles towards the holiday season), it’s anyone’s guess when the new console will arrive next year.

Earlier this month, Nintendo reported a 45% drop in gross profits. While this can simply be chalked up to the current Nintendo Switch console nearing the end of its life cycle – thus translating to less major sales – others speculate that the company is focusing all of its efforts on the new hardware, slowly fizzling out the current generation.
