The Nintendo Switch 2 has a glass screen. Up to now, many have speculated that Nintendo would have opted for a laminated plastic screen to layer over its new HDR and “vivid” LCD panel; however, Nintendo has now confirmed that the panel is glass.
Similar to the screen on the Switch OLED, Nintendo has gone about applying a protective film layer over the Switch 2’s screen that acts as a sort of anti-shatter protector in case this glass cracks and breaks. You shouldn’t peel off this film layer.
The protective film layer was applied to the OLED version of the Switch to prevent any glass shards from scattering if and when the screen broke. Say you dropped the console or accidently banged the display, the film would keep all the glass shards stuck to the film. It is the same situation on the Switch 2.
Nintendo has posted a health and safety document for the Switch 2 console saying that “The screen is covered with a film layer designed to prevent fragments scattering in the event of damage. Do not peel it off”.
It goes without saying that users should keep this film on the screen. Although it will be difficult to peel off due to how thin it is and precisely it has been installed, it is completely possible to remove. It also goes without saying that you should still install a screen protector over the Switch 2’s display even if it comes with this film.
An additional screen protector will protect that film layer from scratches and damage. So it will be an added safety net to prevent your actual screen from damage.
There are already loads of Switch 2 screen protectors on the market, including some that JSAUX has announced alongside its other accessories. The first-party Switch 2 Carry Case, which is launching this week with the console, comes with a screen protector in the box too.
