As we gear up for the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, more details have come to light regarding the console’s software lineup and Nintendo’s plans for third-party games. According to a new report, Nintendo will have a three-phase rollout for games on the Switch 2.
At launch, Nintendo will focus heavily on first-party games with a strong lineup of Switch 2 exclusive titles. These include the now-announced Mario Kart game and a rumoured Mario 3D title. Reports claim that Nintendo will also be focusing on “enhanced” games at launch with original Switch games being ported over to the Switch 2 and patched with visual enhancements across resolution and frame rate.
The second phase in the plan then revolves around third-party games and will be rolled out in October and November. According to the report, Nintendo has not sent out dev kits for the Switch 2 as of yet. These will only be going out after the April reveal and hands-on showcases. However, developers have already begun working on Switch 2 games but have not tested them on the hardware.
These games will be tested and then ported to the Switch 2 after the dev kits are shipped. Users can expect a mass wave of third-party games to arrive on the Switch 2 during October and November as a result of this plan.
Lastly, the third phase is then focused on the holiday season. A report claims that Nintendo will be saving a few first-party games and enhanced patches for December where the company plans to have a blockbuster triple-A game ready to push festive sales.
In closing, we have also learned that next week’s anticipated Switch 2 Direct showcase will play host to the console’s official release date and price. Nintendo is expected to debut a number of games during the showcase alongside launch bundles and enhanced patches for existing Switch games.
In addition to this, select media and content creators will be getting hands-on with the Switch 2 in the next two weeks. This includes a “few hours” of gaming with the console, accessories, and launch games. You will likely see coverage roll out in the coming weeks related to these exclusive hands-on.
We will keep you updated on the South African launch plans for the Nintendo Switch 2. At the moment, retailers are taking sign-ups from customers who are interested in the console. We expect local pre-orders to go live alongside the rest of the world shortly after the Direct stream next week.
