Nintendo’s New Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom Ad Hits Hard

Nintendo’s new Australian advert for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is likely one of the most relatable video game trailers I have seen in a while. The 2-minute video is simple and to the point but its message of melancholy is something we have all experienced before.

The advert shows a man on the bus one morning looking rather sad and down. He seems exhausted and a little depressed. Looking outside the window, even the sky looks gloomy and dull. At home that evening he starts playing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and fails a bit to understand the mechanics behind it.

Even after drowning and his boat tipping over, he continues to persevere through the mechanics. While doing so, his face slowly starts to light up as if the spark is being revived inside of him. His adventures in the game take him into battles with enemies and through the skies.

The next day, the same man gets on the bus and continues to play The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. He then looks out the window and the sky is blue. His eyes sort of glisten with happiness and he smiles as he looks down to continue playing the game.

This is definitely something we can all relate to. The feeling a video game gives us as it provides an outlet to the world around us. Even during the darkest of times, our games are always there for us and often act as an escape from the worries of the world.

The new advert is the perfect way to describe the magic gaming has on us emotionally. I am sure many of us will be served a spectacular distraction this week when the Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom releases on 12 May.
