Nosferatu Review Roundup – A Modern Gothic Horror Classic

The review embargo has dropped for Nosferatu, the upcoming Gothic supernatural horror from The Witch director Robert Eggers. It’s a remake of the classic 1922 German movie of the same name (which was based on Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula) starring Bill Skarsgard, Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult and Aaron-Taylor Johnson. Here’s a quick review roundup of what critics are callign a new modern horror classic.

Nosferatu is set to arrive in cinemas on 25 December 2024 but it’s not probably not a feel-good Christmas movie to see with your family. Critics have called it quite a dark, terrifying experience with sexual content and horrific themes. Above all, it’s also being called one of the best movies of the year. It currently holds a 94% on review aggregate website RottenTomatoes based on 64 reviews so far.

Here’s a roundup of what critics are saying about Nosferatu.

Nick Schager from The Daily Beast stated:

“A monument to dark desire and the corruption it breeds, and a masterpiece of unholy terror that instantly takes its place alongside the genre’s hallowed greats.”

David Ehrlich from IndieWire gave it a A- score, saying:

“Eggers’ broadly suggestive script doesn’t put too fine a point on the specifics of Ellen’s repression, but Depp’s revelatory performance ensures that the rest of the movie doesn’t have to.”

Meagan Navarro from Bloody Disgusting awarded it 5/5:

“Eggers reinterprets Murnau’s seminal work as a psychosexual gothic tragedy that transforms this adaptation into a mesmeric macabre masterpiece.”

David Rooney from The Hollywood Reporter also had positive things to say:

“It’s thrilling to experience a movie so assured in the way it builds and sustains fear, so hypnotically scary as it grabs you by the throat and never lets go.”

Ian Sandwell from Digital Spy gave it a solid 5/5, stating:

“Nosferatu ends up being an excellent blend of the folk horror of The Witch and the grander scale of The Northman. In finally realising his passion project, Robert Eggers has treated us all to the best horror movie of the year.”

Austin Burke from Flick Fan Nation gave it 9/10:

Nosferatu is a fantastical gothic epic that oozes creativity and puts Eggers’ technical craft on full display… If you are looking for a truly immersive horror experience, this is it. Nosferatu is one of the best movies of the year.”

David Crow from Den of Geek gave it 5/5, saying:

“Right down to an unforgettable final shot, the creature’s desire to destroy and rot all in its presence is total. Yet like this beast, Eggers and his film find comfort, bliss even, from watching pretty things wither and die.”

Rodrigo Perez from The Playlist awarded it an A score:

“Bloodcurdling to the last delicious drop, Nosferatu is extraordinarily compelling, one of the best films of the year, and an unforgettable, phantasmagoric experience for theaters that will astonish.”

Nosferatu hits cinemas on 25 December.
