NVIDIA RTX 50 Series Missing ROPs

NVIDIA Confirms Rare RTX 50-Series Manufacturing Defect With Missing ROPs

NVIDIA has confirmed that a number of RTX 50-Series GPUs might have a manufacturing defect. The official statement from the company confirms that this issue covers “rare” instances where some GPUs will be missing ROPs. The cards affected include the RTX 5090, RTX 5080, and RTX 5070 Ti GPUs.

We don’t know if the RTX 5070 is included in the batch because the card isn’t out yet and is still under embargo until early March. However, given the defect covers basically every variant on the market so far, it is likely that the RTX 5070 will be affected.

NVIDIA says:

We have identified a rare issue affecting less than 0.5% (half a percent) of GeForce RTX 5090 / 5090D and 5070 Ti GPUs which have one fewer ROP than specified. The average graphical performance impact is 4%, with no impact on AI and Compute workloads. Affected consumers can contact the board manufacturer for a replacement. The production anomaly has been corrected.

The good news here is that only half a percent of all GPUs on the market have this issue. If you don’t know what the issue is, some users have reported that their 50-Series GPU is claiming to have fewer ROPs (Raster Operations Pipeline).

ROPs essentially handle tasks on the GPU like blending, antialising, final pixel writing, and render-to-texture processes. These units send the information to the frame buffer, and the more ROPs you have, the more can be written.

For example, the NVIDIA RTX 5090 should come with 172 ROPs according to the official specifications of the card. However, various PC programs are only able to read 168 ROPs instead. This means the card is missing 9 ROPs, and it affects the overall performance of the GPU.

TechPowerUp says that their review unit of the NVIDIA RTX 5090 is part of the defect batch. They intentionally tested out the GPU to see how big of an impact the defect would have on performance. In an Elden Ring 4K test, the affected card performed 5.6% slower than the non-missing ROPs card.

NVIDIA says these defect GPUs aren’t limited to Founder’s Edition models. All RTX 50-Series GPUs on the market by all brands can be affected. The best bet would be to test your GPU to make sure it has the correct number of ROPS.

To do this, you’ll need to download GPU-Z on Windows. Under the GPUs specification tab, you’ll see ROPs. If you have fewer than the actual amount meant for the GPU, you should get it replaced. The correct number of ROPs per card are:

  • RTX 5090 – 176 ROPs
  • RTX 5080 – 112 ROPs
  • RTX 5070 Ti – 96 ROPs

If you don’t see this number, and it is a bit lower than the above specification, contact your card maker and ask for a refund/replacement ASAP.

The 5070 Ti should not be 976 ROPS as you have mentioned above 🙂
    Should be 96 ROPS
