NVIDIA Denies Asking Brands to Check ROPs Count on 50-Series Notebooks

NVIDIA might be facing the same missing ROPs issue on upcoming 50-series notebooks as it has on current 50-series desktop GPUs. According to Heise Online and Hardwareluxx, NVIDIA has reached out to notebook brand manufacturers to ask them to check production line hardware for possible defects on GPUs.

The report claims that NVIDIA is concerned that certain 50-series notebooks might be short on ROPs, which is an ongoing issue with the 50-series desktop GPUs. It says that NVIDIA has asked brands to check to be sure these new notebooks aren’t affected.

So far, the desktop issue seems widespread with hundreds of gamers complaining that their GPUs read the incorrect ROP count, which can greatly affect performance. NVIDIA claims that 1 in every 200 50-series cards could be affected by the defect.

According to The Verge, NVIDIA says there isn’t actually a problem with the 50-series notebooks. The company claims that the current checks are just standard quality control, and they haven’t specifically asked any brand to check the ROPs count.

Heise Online and Hardwareluxx, where the original report came from, claim that these “checks” are not normal. It says that NVIDIA has reportedly delayed these 50-series notebooks already without any public knowledge. The 50-series range was meant to launch in March but has now been delayed to April and May. The report claims that NVIDIA has only just issued the final vBIOS for the notebook GPUs, which may also be attributed to the delay of the product.

Various brands are expected to launch 50-series notebooks in the coming weeks including MSI and ASUS. MSI just recently debuted its new Norse-inspired notebook lineup while ASUS is focusing on the usual Strix lineup.

The notebooks follow the successful launch of the desktop RTX 50-series GPUs which I have reviewed over the past few weeks. Be sure to catch up on those on the YouTube channel. The most recent card release was the RTX 5070 which NVIDIA claimed was as powerful as the RTX 4090 but it wasn’t.
