NVIDIA RTX Missing ROPs

NVIDIA Says Every 1 in 200 50-Series GPUs Are Missing Render Units

NVIDIA has confirmed just how many RTX 50-Series GPUs could be affected by the manufacturing defect of missing ROPs. Earlier this week, we shared the news that multiple users were reporting their 50-Series cards were reading incorrect Render Output Units. Essentially, these affected cards are expected to perform a bit worse than usual with a 5% decrease in performance due to the missing tech.

Some users have noticed up to 8 missing ROPs on their cards. For example, the NVIDIA RTX 5090, which costs R70,000 (just saying), is meant to have 176 ROPS, but users have reported only reading 168. Some RTX 5070 Ti owners say the 96-ROPs card is reading 88 units instead.

NVIDIA says that so far, it seems that 1 in every 200 GPUs could be affected by the missing ROPs. This is according to the current customer support feedback, where users have contacted NVIDIA for an exchange of their GPUs.

Keep in mind that the missing ROPs aren’t limited to NVIDIA Founder’s Edition cards. In fact, all brands could have these defected units. So the number is likely much higher than we think right now. In a statement, NVIDIA says:

“We have identified a rare issue affecting less than 0.5% (half a percent) of GeForce RTX 5090 / 5090D, RTX 5080, and 5070 Ti GPUs which have one fewer ROP than specified. The average graphical performance impact is 4%, with no impact on AI and Compute workloads. Affected consumers can contact the board manufacturer for a replacement. The production anomaly has been corrected.”

NVIDIA says that the upcoming RTX 5070 GPU will not be affected by the problem. Seems the company managed to sort out the defect before shipping these units out. However, they were manufactured a few weeks back before the problem was acknowledged by the public, so we’ll have to wait and see.

If you are worried that your 50-series GPU is defective, you can check the ROPs by yourself. Download GPU-Z and take a look at the system information page. If the card is unaffected, a 5090 should have 176 ROPs, a 5080 should have 112 ROPs, and a 5070 Ti should have 96 ROPs. If your numbers are different, contact your manufacturer for an exchange ASAP.
