Last night saw the season 1 finale of the Disney+ show, Obi-Wan Kenobi. The entire series was great, filled with many reveals and links to the rest of the Star Wars franchise. The finale wrapped everything up and got the ball rolling towards the galaxy’s redemption, starting with Star Wars: A New Hope.
Season 1 focused on two main plot points: The rescuing of Leia Organa and then the safeguarding of Luke Skywalker’s existence, and with both those points resolved, Obi-Wan can return to his peaceful life on Tatooine, where the series chose to end.
Currently, there is no official word on whether Obi-Wan Kenobi will be returning for a second season. However, that hasn’t stopped the cast from openly discussing their desire for the show to continue. In an interview to promote the show Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan himself) said he is open to filming another season, a sentiment echoed by director Deborah Chow.
The most significant roadblock to continuing with the story is that Obi-Wan Kenobi was conceived as a limited series and didn’t have much set up for a follow-up season. That doesn’t mean there aren’t ways for the show to go, though.
When Obi-Wan Kenobi started airing, the Obi-Wan introduced to us was, for the lack of a better word, a hermit. He lived entirely off the grid and as far away from society as possible. He had even buried his lightsaber and severed all ties to the Force. However, let’s look toward the Star Wars movie, A New Hope. Here we have a version of Obi-Wan who is reintegrated into society, connected to the Force and welding both his and Anakin Skywalker’s lightsabers.
It’s also well known in the Star Wars lore that before the events of A New Hope, Obi-Wan fought and killed Darth Maul. At the end of the day, there is definitely room for a second season of the hit show, and fans wouldn’t object to seeing more of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s life before he became the character we grew to love in the movie franchise.
